Social and Emotional Learning in the Virtual Classroom

According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL),

“Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.”

We know that SEL is best supported through positive interactions and relationships between students and teachers. We also know that SEL skills should not only be developed within the context of SEL lessons, rather, they should be integrated and addressed across content areas and throughout the school day. But what does this look like in a virtual or blended setting?

As educators, we understand that virtual learning has a significant impact on the social and emotional wellness of our students. That’s why we created a comprehensive SEL Guide, designed to help teachers promote social and emotional wellness in the virtual classroom. While the strategies in this guide are geared towards the virtual classroom, they are also relevant and applicable during face-to-face learning.

Our SEL guide is aligned to the five core competencies of social and emotional learning, as identified by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning:

  • Self-awareness

  • Self-management

  • Social awareness

  • Relationship skills

  • Responsible decision-making

For each competency, you’ll find specific strategies, suggested tools, and links to resources for additional information. We hope this guide supports educators everywhere as you work to purposefully integrate SEL in the virtual classroom.
